What is schema.org? As webmasters we want our websites to be easily searchable by the major search providers including Bing, Google, and Yahoo!. These search engines rely on collection of schemas, i.e., html tags, to improve the display of search results, making it easier to find the right pages. Many sites are built from structured data, but then put into html they lose the original structured data. A shared markup vocabulary makes it easier for webmasters to decide on markup schema and get the maximum benefit for their efforts. Bing, Google, and Yahoo! have come together to provide a shared collection of schemas that webmasters can use.

Let’s get started.
You use the schema.org vocabulary, along with the microdata format, to add information to your html content. The long term goal is to support a wider range of formats, the initial focus is on Microdata. They have a guide on the website that will help get you up to speed with microdata and schema.org, so that you can start adding markup to your web pages.

The broadest item type is Thing, which has four properties: name, description, url, and image. More specific types share properties with broader types. For example, a Place is a more specific type of Thing, and a LocalBusiness is a more specific type of Place. More specific items inherit the properties of their parent.

Here’s a set of commonly used item types:
– Creative works: CreativeWork, Book, Movie, MusicRecording, Recipe, TVSeries …
– Embedded non-text objects: AudioObject, ImageObject, VideoObject
– Event
– Organization
– Person
– Place, LocalBusiness, Restaurant …
– Product, Offer, AggregateOffer
– Review, AggregateRating

You can also see a full list of all item types, listed on a single page.

.Net Rocks recently talked to Emily Lewis about HTML5, CSS3, Microformats, and general web developement topics. I enjoyed the podcast and in the podcast they talked about Schema.org. Listen and enjoy.

URL shortners provide the option to create a QR code from their shortened addresses.

Google provides goo.gl which when you add ".qr" to the end of a shortened address and get the QR code. The QR code is also available from the "Details" link in the list of shortened addresses.

bit.ly – After you have generated a shortened link click on the "Info" page and you will see details of the stats and a QR code for the link. Also if you add ".qrcode" to the end of a bit.ly address you will see the QR code.

It also does very clever things with YouTube videos, Google maps etc. Here is the QR code for my blog:
